Frances Gammon Martin

August 24, 1941 - July 04, 2016

Frances Gammon Martin

Frances Gammon Martin, age 74, passed away peacefully, July 4th, 2016 at her Tybee Island home. Born in Gadsden, AL on August 24th, 1941, she was the daughter of the late William W. Gammon and the late Ezell G. Gammon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Cordson Martin, two brothers, Rod Gammon and Ros Gammon both of Ormond Beach, FL, and a half-brother, Billy Gammon of Rome, GA. Frances graduated from Oxford High School in Oxford, AL before attending DeKalb Community College. While in Lithonia, GA she was a member of the Junior Women’s Club.

Upon moving to Statesboro, she quickly became a part of her new community involving herself in various clubs and activities. She served as President of the Garden Club, and as both a Charter member and past President of the Statesboro Newcomers Club. Frances also immersed herself in her children’s sports activities and was their biggest fan never missing a game. She often mentioned how grateful she was that Donna was to be able to grow up surrounded by wonderful friends and how she loved each and every one of them.

Frances worked as an Administrative Secretary with the Georgia Southern Athletic Department beginning in August of 1979 which was a very exciting time in Georgia Southern Athletics history. Serving as secretary to the Director of Athletics, the Assistant Athletic Director, and some 20 coaches, she assisted them in all aspects related to a then growing GSU Athletics program. Her pride of her time at GSU would often resonant in stories told of her time spent there and memories of her peers…especially of Erk Russell. She often spoke of having to give Erk his first tour of Georgia Southern upon his arrival as everyone else was at lunch.

Frances moved from Statesboro in 1985 and relocated to Tybee Island where she met and married her husband Robert (Bob) Martin. Married in 1989, Frances and Bob were known to many on the island. They were the regulars at the infamous DeSoto Hotel, where they spent many afternoons with their friends, and at the American Legion where both Frances and Donna were members of the Auxiliary. They enjoyed their many years socializing and fishing on the island.

Frances is survived by her daughter, Donna D. White of Tybee Island, GA and a son, Mark N. White of Bozeman, MT. Also, a sister-in-law, Jean Gammon of Ormond Beach, FL and a brother, Jerry Gammon of Douglasville, GA.

A private interment will be held on Friday, July 8th.

Remembrances: Hospice Savannah – P.O Box #13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416-0190 or the Disabled Veterans National Foundation – P.O. Box #96262, Washington, DC 20090.

Donna would like to express her gratitude to Hospice Savannah and to Frances’ caregivers that have been by her side for the past year, Julia Dunn and Senora Shields. Also, former caregivers Brandy Kelsey and Princess White.
